And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
GENESIS 1:12

![Milk Thistle/ Botanical name: Silybum marianum
Always identify plants correctly. When in doubt, leave it out!
There is a purple thistle growing in ditches and vacant lots, and hospitals keep a version of it locked in the pharmacy for the worst poisoning in mycology. God put the antidote in a thistle.
Eat one death cap mushroom, Amanita phalloides, and your liver shuts down. There is no drug for it. What they run through the IV is silibinin, from this seed. It parks on the transporter the poison uses to get into the liver cell, so the toxin can’t get in to do the damage.
Research:
1,491 people poisoned by death cap got IV silibinin. 1,384 lived. 93% survival, versus over 20% mortality on penicillin.[nih]
Given inside 48 hours, liver damage stayed light. Past 48 hours, much worse (same review).
Fatty liver: 8 trials, 587 patients. AST and ALT down.[nih]
Type 2 diabetes: 5 trials, 270 patients. Fasting glucose down 27 points, A1c down 1.07. Authors call the evidence low quality (J Diabetes Res 2016).
TB drugs: 5 trials, 1,198 patients. Drug-caused liver injury cut by about two thirds at 4 weeks (Eur J Clin Pharmacol).
Where it fails: 13 trials, 915 patients. No effect on death rates in alcoholic or hepatitis B and C liver disease (Cochrane).
Best use:
Tea is the weakest thing you can make with this seed. The active compounds are fat-loving, which is why the NCI notes milk thistle is given as a capsule or extract rather than as a tea.
Grind the seed fresh in a coffee grinder and take about a teaspoon in food, yogurt, or a smoothie. Small batches, the oil goes rancid.
Tincture the crushed seed 1:5 in 50% alcohol, six weeks.
Studied doses were 140 to 420 mg of silymarin daily, split three times.
It’s a liver tonic. Give it weeks, not days.
Safety: it’s in the daisy family, so check for allergies. It can change how fast the liver clears certain medications. If you take prescriptions, ask your prescriber before you start.
God put healing in a thistle nobody wanted.
Save this.
